Common Conditions

What can lifestyle medicine help with?

Fatigue and tiredness

Fatigue and Tiredness

Extremely common, and usually a consequence of our lifestyle, either poor nutrition and deficiencies, or chronic stress and poor sleep. Dr Suresh can help you get to the route of the problem and fix it! By asking for the right investigations, many of which will not be requested by your usual doctor, we can find what may be causing your issues and start the road to fixing them.

Weight gain / loss

Weight Gain

Do you know why you are putting on weight? Are you dieting and controlling your calories even down to very low levels yet still can't lose weight? Or worse - gaining weight! Have you managed to lose weight only to ping right back to where you were? Dr Suresh can help you work out what is going wrong and how to fix it! Usually without calorie counting!

Low immune system

Low Immune System

Have you been to a doctor complaining of a low immune system, or feeling tired and sluggish, only to be told your blood tests are fine and go away? You feel fobbed off, or worse they make you feel you are making it up! You aren't! They just maybe haven't done the right tests. Did you know a chronically low zinc level or a chronically raised cortisol can cause a low immune system?

Poor Sleep

Poor Sleep

A particular problem that many of us face, and one we can almost never seem to find proper help with other than 'here have a sleeping tablet'. There's a better approach. By taking time to explore your sleep issues, Dr Suresh can help you work out what the root cause of your sleeping difficulty is and fix it without addictive or dangerous medications.

Mental Health

Stress and Mental Health

Dr Suresh has extra training in helping patients with mental health problems, and in particular how they can affect our physical health. Did you know that often metabolic disorders are often misdiagnosed as mental health problems and patients may be given completely the wrong treatment? Taking time to explore the issues can prevent this.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

Did you know that Statins have almost no proven benefit for heart disease? Yet most patients are simply told 'your cholesterol is high, have a statin'. There's a better way! By looking properly at your diet and exercise regime, Dr Suresh can help you to not just lower your CV risk, but actively reverse it, often without medications. Accurate tests can indicate your risk.

Diabetes

Diabetes

Did you know Type 2 Diabetes is curable? Probably not - almost nobody knows this. It is curable with the right interventions - and not just medications. Proper lifestyle, including techniques such as intermittent fasting, low carb diets, and Keto diets can be incredibly successful at reversing type 2 diabetes and curing it. Dr Suresh has extra training and offers this service.

worried about your risks?

Worried About Your Risks

If you are worried about your underlying risks, or just want to know where you stand underneath the surface, Dr Suresh can help. He is not afraid to check the appropriate blood tests and investigations like Apolipoproteins and vitamin checks, and CT Calcium Score tests to accurately assess your risks, sometimes decades before they may be an issue, so you have plenty of time to deal with them.

What is Lifestyle Medicine?

"The application of enrivonmental, behavioural, medical and motivastional principles to the management of lifestyle related health problems". Simply put, Lifestyle Medicine provides a whole-system approach to the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases through the improvement of your lifestyle - diet, nutrition, physical activity, social relationships, sleep, and mental health.

In practical terms, this means spending lots of time with patients, fully exploring their health in a holistic manner, and spending time educating and helping them to improve their diet and nutrition, well beyond the standard advice (of don't eat badly), giving detailed physical activity prescriptions, advice and help with sleep and in particular correcting poor sleep, improving social relationships and proving expert mental health support through psychological interventions.

Can anyone do lifestyle medicine? Yes - but extra training is definitely recommended. Dr Suresh has done extensive extra work and training in this field and is currently working towards his Board Certification, and is also working towards Fellowship of the Australasian College of Lifestyle Medicine (ASLM).

Why should I see Dr Suresh? Many of the patients I see feel fobbed off by their usual doctor, or they simply don't spend long enough with them to really explore their issues and help them to tackle their problems without just resorting to medications. It is often said that Doctors are too quick to reach for medications - well this is actually true. Dr Suresh tries to help his patients through long appointments, holistic care, and proper lifestyle interventions and mental health support, not just reaching for medications.

What can Lifestyle Medicine help with? Lots of conditions - but particularly those caused primarily through poor lifestyle. For example, Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Weight gain and Obesity, High Blood Pressure, Arthritis, Rashes and Dermatitis, Acne, etc. The list goes on! Lifestyle Medicine principles can be applied to any disease or illness though - we don't have to reach for medications straight away!

Zinc

Zinc deficiency is very common, and can cause a multitude of issues. Many of those issues you just put up with could be due to Zinc deficiency, including hormonal problems and commonly a low immune system. If you just seem to always be unwell, or 'get hit hard' when you get unwell, you may have a zinc deficiency.

Copper

Copper deficiency is not especially common, but it certainly happens a lot more than you might think. Copper deficiency can cause palpitations, sweats, fatigue and tiredness, nausea and vomiting and nerve problems. Fixing it is usually a simple process of proper dietary sources. Speak to Dr Suresh if you want this checked.

Selenium

Did you know that for certain types of breast cancer, a normal selenium level has been shown to be as protective as prophylactic mastectomy? Particularly in those with BRCA2 mutations! But how would you know what your levels are if they aren't checked? Low selenium levels are also implicated in almost all cancers!

Insulin Resistance

Extremely common - almost every single patient I test has high levels of Insulin Resistance. But what can it cause? Almost everything! ALl those things that you just put down to 'getting older', weight gain, tiredness, lethargy, fatigue, aches and pains - they may all be high insulin resistance. Fixing it is easy - just speak to Dr Suresh.

Cortisol

Do you know what your cortisol levels are? Why does it matter? Well a chronically elevated Cortisol level can lead to fatigue, weight gain, lethargy, low immune system and dramatically increases your risk of heart disease, cancer and dementia. Even 'normal' results may not be - you need to know what levels to look for - Dr Suresh can help.

Vitamin D

Despite the huge amount of sunshine we get in Australia, Vitamin D deficiency is ridiculously common. Most patietns I check have a low vitamin D level, but it's rarely checked by most doctors - they assume because we have sunshine that you won't be deficient. It can cause fatigue, tiredness, can lead to osteoporosis and other problems.
