GP Focussed Psychology Strategies (GP-FPS)
Dr Suresh Khirwadkar has advanced training in diagnosing and treating patients with mental health issues, as well as over 12 years experience as a doctor. He has studied extra training in GP-FPS and is accredited by Medicare to provide extra mental health support for patients, with counselling and psychotherapy. This means that Dr Suresh can see you with a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and you may not need to wait months or years to see a psychologist or a psychiatrist.
GP-FPS sessions are usually 1 hour long (some patients choose 45 minutes though) and are usually weekly or 2 weekly for the best outcomes. Typically 10-20 sessions will be required to help the patient, but sometimes as few as 1-2 sessions are all that is needed. Dr Suresh will make it clear to you how many sessions he thinks you may need so you can plan accordingly, and he regularly reviews the plan with you every 5 sessions to make sure you are getting the most out of it.
Dr Suresh employs a number of methods to help his patients, including CBT, IPT and Motivational interviewing. Sometimes, just plain and simple talking therapy is what is called for, or sometimes just a good cry. It's amazing how much release some patients can experience when they are just giving the time and support to let it all out, and sometimes that's all they need.
Dr Suresh believes in prescriptions only when required. Whilst he is happy to prescribe medications for mental health issues, many issues can be resolved with some time and talking therpaies or lifestyle interventions, rather than simply reaching for medications. He will never just simply start a tablet then never review you! Close follow up ensures you are benefitting and if you aren't he will change or stop the medications. He also regularly reviews his patients to see if they can stop the medications, or at least reduce them.
Mental Health
Well over 90% of the consultations that Dr Suresh does have a mental health component. It is incredibly common, we just don't talk about it. Dr Suresh can help you with your stress maangement, anxiety and depression, or simply if you just want to 'top up' your mental health and stop any issues before they even start

Medications
Sometimes medications are appropriate. Dr Suresh tries to treat without them where possible, but when required he is happy to prescribe them. He won't just prescribe them and never see you though! Active follow up to ensure they are working and helping you, or changing or stopping them
